Morning Ambles: Making the Most of Stolen Moments

We live in a wonderful world that is full of beauty, charm and adventure. There is no end to the adventures that we can have if only we seek them with our eyes open.   — Jawaharlal Nehru

What do you do when you find yourself with unexpected time to yourself? Two days a week I have about an hour between the time I drop off our son at school and when I have to be to work. Sadly, it took me years to realize I’ve been squandering that hour flicking through my Facebook feed, waiting to be able clock in. So many missed field trips!

Today, I decided to throw on my walking shoes and amble along the Fox River Trail. Ambling is my absolute favorite type of walking. Oh, the luxury of ambling! I don’t have to be anywhere, I’m not trying to cram in exercise, and there’s no pressure to accomplish anything. This morning, I ambled for 40 minutes and just about a half mile and discovered some neat stuff.

There were fall leaves, of course, but also these dazzling flowers, Queen Anne’s Lace, and Milkweed ready to blow away.

I walked past a favorite Green Bay historical building of mine.

I stopped several time to scope out this freighter. I have a lifelong attraction to the coal ships that come in and out of Green Bay. It stems from a Grandfather passing his love for river (and boat) watching on the Mississippi as well as my favorite school field trip ever, touring a coal ship docked along the Fox River.

I even noticed some local “art”…

And a view of Minahan’s Tomb.

All this to experience/explore/discover, in just a half mile. It’s all about fitting in small adventures where you find the time.  Who knows, maybe one day I’ll make it farther than a half mile.
