Make a Reading Fort-in-a-Bag

Reading Fort in a Bag {Life as a Field Trip}
My nephew chose the whale over a T-Rex. Cool kid!

I wanted to make a gift for my three-year-old nephew and I wanted it to be educational and fun.  I decided to make a Fort-in-a-Bag. I wish I could take credit for the idea, but plenty of others have already posted their Fort-in-a-Bag creations all over Pinterest.  What I noticed though, is that they didn’t include a necessary item in their kits: books! What’s more fun to do in a fort than read with your flashlight?!

My nephew loves books and being read to, and what kid doesn’t love building forts? I decided it would be something fun for him to do with his older cousin when we come to visit in March. I can see the two of them building the fort “together” and reading in their fort with flashlights.

I chose books that both my nephew and his grownups will enjoy.

Reading Fort in a Bag Contents

  • Pillowcase
  • Rope made from old t-shirts
  • Small flashlight
  • Clips
  • Brightly colored sheets
  • Books! Lots of books!

I designed an iron-on transfer for the bag using Ribbet, but I think a fun pillow case or a note safety-pinned to the bag is just as great. Kids won’t know or care whether there are cooler forts in a bag out there!

Will P and his younger cousin actually build the fort and read together? Probably not.  It’s more likely they’ll dump out the contents and make something entirely different (a nest, maybe?) with the stuff in the bag and the books will be read another time. But an aunt can dream can’t she?
