Field Trip: Preparing for the Science Fair

Science Fair Display BoardDo you remember how excited P and I both were to be working on our first science fair project together? Well, it’s been kind of like the first pancake; the first one’s a throw away. It never turns out like it’s supposed to. We selected our first experiment, growing microbes, in petri dishes with Agar. We started far in advance to be sure we had time for errors and making the display board. After the second attempt at growing microbes failed, we thought we could squeeze one more attempt in before the science fair…and this time get good results. However, Mom (that’d be me with the guilty expression on her face) mixed up the days and this Sunday night realized the Science Fair was in less than two days… Definitely not enough time to wait for those precious microbes to grow, check the results and create a display board.

Last night, after I had a panic attack, we did a basic experiment to test different sour candies for acid. P thought it was the BEST experiment ever because there was lots of fizzing and he could eat the leftover candy. The experiment itself went smoothly though having P type the headings for his display board, hunt and peck style, was a real test in patience. He got the headings done and headed to bed. I raced off to pick up the photos from Walgreens and hit the hay.

It was an early morning for both of us as P assembled his display board with the pieces he had painstakingly typed and cut out the night before. There wasn’t time for anything fancy so I handed over my washi tape so he could doll it up. He was worried he’d forget what to say when “performing” so we wrote a cheat sheet together for him to use while kids asked about his experiment.  We did a couple of practice runs and now we’re off to school.

Let’s hope the washi tape holds through the afternoon. Fingers crossed!
