I never feel alone on my solo hikes. It may be hard to relate to for some, but I can explore outdoors for hours. No chatting with a friend for company. No podcasts, no music, no earbuds. Just me walking while I take everything in through my senses.

It’s a feeling of oneness rather than loneliness. I am surrounded by the trees, the grasses, and the earth beneath me, and the lives of the mammals, birds, amphibians, and reptiles going on around me. I am not alone. I am just as much a part of a community in the forest as I am on the concrete sidewalks in the heart of a city. The difference? Nature is a community most of us walk through rather than connect to.

On my morning walk through the woods last fall, I tuned into the sounds around me. My feet on the gravel, cranes flying overhead, crows cawing, jays calling, crickets and cicadas singing, and chipmunks and squirrels chittering. I didn’t feel alone at all among my woodland friends.

Then there was a new sound in the distance, not as organic to the landscape as the rest of the ambient noise. As I walked around a bend in the trail I came upon a class of four or five-year-olds, walking in pairs, hand in hand, behind their teacher. They wore winter coats, backpacks bouncing along, peering up at me in surprise, perhaps trying to figure me out.

“It’s a beautiful day for a walk!” I shared and waved back at each of the kiddos as they walked past me, saying “Hi!” again and again. As the last pair of children approached, one concerned boy said, “What are you doing out here all alone?”

“I’m out here walking and looking for wildlife and taking pictures,” I answered cheerfully, pointing to the camera around my neck.

He considered my answer and said, “Okay, just walk right behind us.” He gestured with his hand that I should get in line and stay with the group.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. This adorable fuzzball is a boring old woodchuck/groundhog (Marmota Monax) in the Midwest. In Colorado it's a super cool, super floofy Yellow-Bellied Marmot (Marmota Flaviventris) living its best life in the mountains. They're both marmots and both are large ground squirrels, but here they're MEH and there they're SQUEE!

Now that I know they're both marmots, whenever I see one I say "Marmot!" And point to the "groundhog". It adds a little squee to my life, and who doesn't need more squee?

*Yes, they can be a nuisance (all animals can be if they inconvenience humans), but they also play an important ecological role, and they're so damn cute. Have you ever seen baby marmots? Even cuter. Checkout the last two pictures.

🌲Add this to your spring/summer bucket list! This was so much fun. The trail goes through the woods and then through part of the zoo. For me, the best part was walking among the treetops (and imagining I was in Swiss Family Robinson). But don't go too fast. Take your time traipsing through the treetops! It'll be over before you know it.

I’ve been going about aging in the wrong way. Age is far too flat. So two dimensional. We need something bigger to capture the beauty and brutality of living.

Children grow so rapidly, both their bodies and brains. The rapid growth and development are clear to those watching, but when we move into adulthood, our growth is no longer so visible. Honestly, most people aren’t interested in our inner evolution.

Our bodies continue to change slowly, but the wrinkles, hair loss, clicking knees, and spare tires don’t tell the whole story. People can’t see the ways we’ve loved and been loved, the adventures (of all sizes) we’ve been on, the losses suffered, the hardships, the people who have come into our lives, or the moments when we finally come into our own. Like Doctor Who's Tardis, we are bigger on the inside.

Following the walleye, northern pike, and sturgeon

Following the walleye, northern pike, and sturgeon as they move upstream (or up ditch) to spawn is one of our spring family traditions.

It's not often we get to observe these fish up close (unless they're on the end of a fishing line and I prefer to leave these beauties alone).

We spotted these (8) walleye on Brown Road today near the bay. We haven't seen pike yet, but we usually see them on Lineville and Brown Road. Sturgeon are my favorite and spawn a little later. We see them at the dam in De Pere and several spots on the Wolf River.

It's never a bad day searching for spawning fish. Even if we don't see a single one, we see all kinds of birds, tadpoles, frogs, turtles, muskrats, and once even fairy shrimp. There's always something to pay attention to in this great big world of ours 💚 #BeCurious
