Another Book I Didn’t Want to Read (but did anyway)

“You have to read this book!”

There’s something about working in a library that draws people to say this to me…often. Not only in the library, but my family and friends, too. I love the enthusiasm and passion they have for these books. Many of the recommendations are not “my kind of books”, but sometimes I end up reading really good books I would never have picked up on my own.  This was one of those kinds of books.

Bad Girls Don’t Die by Katie Alender

The only difference is no one told me to read this one. This book is really popular with teens at my library. I wanted to know why.  From the title alone I couldn’t guess what was so appealing about it. Maybe it was a Christopher Pike kind of book (Remember him? I think I read every single one of his books. Twice.)? Or there was a hot ghost boy? I had no idea. The book intrigued me. I gave it a try.

I read it in three days. I would have read it more quickly, but I have “responsibilities”.

Alexis and her sister Kasey live in an unusual house where unusual things start happening. Really unusual. There’s a little teen romance, parent issues, but most of all possession, ghosts and creepy dolls. It scared the pants off me.

I posted my reaction on Facebook right after I finished reading it:

Just finished a scary book, everyone else in the house is asleep, it’s totally dark and I’m too scared to walk to the bathroom. Think my husband will mind if I wake him up to make sure the coast is clear? LOL.

Then,

I’m thinking it would have been a good idea to turn the bathroom nightlight on BEFORE reading the book. I’m going to make a run for it. If you don’t hear from me again it was definitely an evil doll that got me.

Bad Girls Don’t Die is probably not very scary for most readers…I have a very vivid imagination. It was too much for me, but not so much that I won’t be reading the sequel. This time though, I’ll remember to turn on the nightlight before I start reading.

  1. I remember all those “you’ve got to read this…” suggestions. Someitmes I felt obligated just because I worked in the library and should know something about the latest really popular author but mostly I just smiled and said,”I’ll add that to my list.” Never did read a Danielle Steel…..and I’m a better woman for it.
