Good Things in a Jar

This is the first year in a long time that I feel good, really good, going into the new year. For the past several years, I’ve desperately crashed into the new year hoping, praying that the new year would be better. Our son declared 2014 the “Year of Excitement!”

Good Things jar for the New Year
I used Mod Podge, fabric remnants and used picture books to make this bad boy.

Maybe that’s why I felt compelled to finish my “Good Things” jar yesterday. I started making it on January 1, 2013. It was meant to be a “Good Things” jar like the ones you’ve seen all over Facebook and Pinterest lately. After you choose and decorate a large jar, family members write good things every day and put them in the jar. Then on New Year’s Eve you and your family get to read all the wonderful things that happened over the year.

I started making this jar to send to a good friend. Instead it sat on the floor next to my dresser 85% finished for all of 2013. That dusty jar was something of symbol for 2013…putting things off or starting things and never completing them became a way of life.

But this year is different. Yesterday I finished the jar, but I’m not sending it to my friend (I’m betting she gave up on me by about June 2013). Instead, we’re going to use it at our house. Day one is already in the books. We each put our “good things” in the jar yesterday. I also added the New Year’s Resolution page P and I filled out on New Year’s Eve.

We’re off to a good start. I’m already looking forward to December 31, 2014 to see if the year turns out as well as it started. And of course I’m looking forward to reading all of our “good things”.
