Field trips don’t have to come with a price tag. In fact, the best ones are free.
The Dunbar Town Beach is one of these frugal field trips. It’s not far from our place in Northern Wisconsin. The beach is just a short drive down Highway 8 and then a quick jog down Lily Lake Road, but it feels like another world.
If you didn’t know it was there you might drive right by and not notice it. I bet it doesn’t look like anything special to most people. But it caught my eye last fall when we were driving back from 12 Foot Falls.
What did I see when we stumbled across it for the first time last fall? The perfect picnic spot. A great family beach. No entry fees, no fancy bathrooms, no crowds. Lots of sand, water and quiet. It’s a little piece of paradise, if you ask me.
It’s the perfect place to ignore time and turn off the phone. Just grab some empty yogurt containers, a couple of big spoons, a picnic lunch and settle in for a summer afternoon.
This past Memorial Day weekend, one of the biggest tourist days of the summer, there were just three kids sharing the beach with us and they didn’t even stay.
