A friend and I miraculously found ourselves with a free Saturday afternoon. No kids, no errands, no commitments. We pointed the car toward Cecil and headed for Sunflower Fest, taking the winding back roads through fields upon fields of corn. When the sunflower fields started to outnumber the corn fields we knew we had arrived at the festival.
And it was a festival. The line for hayrides through the sunflower fields was insane. We headed straight for the fields passing face painting, kids crafts, a polka band, concessions, inflatables, and a craft fair. But remember, no kids, so we blew right by and stepped inside the magic of the sunflowers. Rows and rows and rows of sunflowers. Every one a little different from its neighbor. Everywhere we turned there were bees busily flying from flower to flower; sometimes three bees on just one flower. It truly felt magical.
The trails reminded me of autumn corn mazes but with none of the mystery. Bergsbaken Farm posted interesting informational signs throughout the trails as well as a couple of platforms to get a better view…or selfie. They also made sure to provide plenty of adorable photo opportunities.
Bergsbaken Farms doesn’t charge admission but does request donations for walking the fields, hayrides, etc. The whole festival was simply charming. A little “peopley” for my taste, so next time we’ll come earlier to avoid the crowds.
I’ll have to put this on my to-do list for next year.
