A friend posted this summery melted-crayon craft on my Facebook page last week. We haven’t tried the melted crayon thing yet…unless you count my son microwaving crayons on a paper plate because I wouldn’t do the melt-crayons-with-a-hair-dryer thing. Melted crayons on a paper plate aren’t very exciting, but the more I looked at the flower post, the more I thought we should do it. We just needed to tweak it a little to make it a great handmade Christmas gift. We:
- decided to use naked crayons instead of leaving the wrappers on.
- used only green crayons for the stems and greenery.
- completely ignored the directions. Didn’t even read ’em.
Evidently, our hair dryer is a mega powerful hair dryer with more power than an Iowa wind turbine. There were no cute, strait melted-crayon lines for us, but it turned out pretty cute.
How to Rock Your Own Christmas crayon art
- Cut a piece of foam core to your preferred size.
- Super-glue the peeled crayons to the foam core.
- Break out your hair dryer and heat those crayons to their melting point.
- Once you’ve melted the crayons enough to create your masterpiece, flip the foam core so the crayons are on the bottom.
- Super glue your poinsettia flowers to the top. We inserted the stems in the foam core first and then superglue them in place.
- Sprinkle liberally with glue and glitter (obviously, not for the faint of crafty heart).
- Mix it up! Use pinecones and fake Christmas greenery to make trees or wreaths.
Happy creating and Merry Christmas!
