Poetry and Reading with Pavel
Look who we discovered grinning out at us from behind the vertical blinds this morning; Pavel the Poem Gnome! P wrote him a nice poem about monsters, ghosts, skeletons and other creepy creatures and left it with Pavel in the flower garden (Everyday is Halloween in his world). I guess the thunderstorm was too much because in his return note Pavel added a P.S. that he hoped it would be okay that he came in from the thunderstorm. Pavel’s whole note encouraged P to keep reading and it read:
“Dear Paolo,
Wow! I like your poem! I’ve watched and heard a lot this week while sitting on your desk (a nice change from standing all day in the garden). You read about Lewis and Clark and about video games. You also read to a dog at the library! You’re doing great with your reading, keep it up! Now that you read to a dog, I want you to read to Dinah this week. Maybe she would like to read a book about other dogs with you.
Here’s your poem for the week. It’s a monster haiku. 🙂
Monsters make a noise.
Screaming, squealing, off we run.
Not afraid, are you?
Pavel
P.S. I hope it’s okay that I came in out of the rain!”

So far the Poem Gnome idea is still working. P is reading the notes, writing notes back to Pavel, and learning more about poetry. We’ll read Won Ton: A Cat Tale Told in Haiku and write a few of our own haiku poems. Reading, writing, poetry and time spent together, perfect! Here’s hoping Pavel is as successful for the rest of the summer!
This is a great idea! I am so happy to be meeting people who are so creative about education.
Thank you and thank you for taking the time to say ‘hi’!
