Last year P and I decided to check out Oneida’s bison herd. We heard there was an overlook to watch the bison. We were pleasantly surprised to find a picnic area, educational signs and a giant bison statue. Okay, technically I was pleasantly surprised.
P was mad because I wouldn’t let him do something trivial (I can’t even remember what) and refused to get out of the car. I explored alone while he glared at me from the backseat of the car.
I decided the observation area would be perfect for a picnic and a little birding. Next time we’re definitely bringing a pair of binoculars!
P finally lost the attitude when we were heading out. We were the only car on the road so we slowed down and stopped right in front of part of the bison herd. Seeing so many bison so close to the road was pretty impressive. And seeing a calf was even better.
I’m going to try taking P again for this week’s Lewis & Clark activity. We’ll bring a picnic lunch, he can make observations in his Lewis and Clark expedition journal and we can do a little bird watching. Hopefully this time he’ll get out of the car!
If you’d like to check out the Oneida Bison Observation area take Hwy 54 west, turn right or north on Cooper Rd and you’ll see the sign on your left.
I didn’t realize there were bison in that area. We have a herd on Antelope Island and we go there often to watch the animals. They even have antelope on Antelope Island – who knew!
Well, we don’t have wild bison, but we do have a bison farm.
