I can’t take credit for this wonderful idea. I don’t know who came up with the idea originally, but it’s too good not to pass on. If you do know who came up with it, please send me a message and I’ll give them credit!
I stumbled across this idea for a graduation gift when P was four years old. I immediately bought a copy of the book Oh, The Places You’ll Go! by Dr. Seuss.
It’s a simple idea. Have your child’s teachers sign the book at the end of each school year. When your child finishes 8th grade you’ll have a beautiful graduation gift filled with memories and words of encouragement.
Reading the wonderful words from P’s teachers this year made me dig out the copy of Oh, The Places You’ll Go! that my parents gave to me when I graduated from college. They signed the book and added little notes throughout the book, personalizing it. What an awesome trip down Memory Lane. By personalizing it, they captured a sliver of my life; details I’d forgotten. I loved roller blading and wanted to start playing soccer. I loved the great outdoors and had a boyfriend in a band. I had a fantastic pair of L.L. Bean hiking shoes. All great memories.
My husband and I will have to make sure to personalize the text of the book before we give it to him at his 8th grade graduation. I hope P will cherish it as much as do mine. He’s certainly desperately curious to know what his teachers have written so far (It’s waaaaay to difficult to keep its existence a secret from our super observant super sleuth). Maybe he’ll have forgotten about it by the time he’s 13…
This is a wonderful idea that I need to do for my grandchildren. It will be hard to keep it a secret until they graduate from eighth grade though.
Yeah, kids are pretty observant and ‘curious’ 🙂
