Mini Field Trip: Born Learning Trail

Lots of bright, engaging colors

Have you checked out the Born Learning trail at Brown County’s Central Library yet?

It’s FREE. It’s FUN. It’s EDUCATIONAL. It’s NOT an electronic gizmo. The trail is a perfect, no prep needed, get-out-of-the-house-and-save-your-sanity activity. You can make this trail last as long as you’d like, but you don’t need to pack a big lunch, drive out of the county and hope your children don’t start fighting in the back seat before you get there. It’s also the perfect activity to get you to slow down and connect with your young children.

The trail has ten stations (so far) that start near the back entrance of the library. They continue down the sidewalk and around the grassy shaded area. Each stop’s sign has an educational activity for you and your children to do together. The trail isn’t just for parents and their children. Grandparents, older siblings, aunts and uncles could make good use of this trail, too.

The Brown County United Way describes the trail on its Facebook page,

“The Born Learning Trail is being installed as part of the Community Partnership for Children initiative coordinated by the Brown County United Way. The trail is designed to help adults interact with young children to boost language and literacy development and to help caregivers understand how to best support early learning in outdoor everyday moments. It captures ten fun outdoor games on engaging signs, each including activities such as interactive storytelling which builds a child’s ability to imagine and listen. The trail is sponsored by the Brown County United Way Emerging Leaders Society, the Carl and Judy Buergi Family in memory of their parents and the Community Partnership for Children Fund at United Way.”

The activities take you in a loop ending near my old favorite, the pond.

This is just what Green Bay needs more of- fun, positive, family friendly activities located where families will be anyway. P’s a little too old for most of the activities, but he really liked the very colorful hopscotch. It would have been a perfect way to round out our summer visits to the Saturday Farmers Market when he was young. It’s too late for us, but why not walk over and check it out with the kiddos after you wander the aisles of fruit and veggies today?

  1. That is a neat idea to get the kids involved in outdoor activity. I wonder if our town has a trail like that! I know our library doesn’t and that would be a great idea to “wear your kids out” on the weekend!
