Lewis & Clark Summer Expedition: Week Seven

Lewis & Clark Summer Expedition for Kids {Life as a Field Trip}How’s the Lewis & Clark Summer Expedition going so far? I’m not going to lie. Sometimes it’s tough squeezing it all in every week, but it is working. P is getting more reading and writing in this summer than he would have without it and we’re both having fun!

Lewis & Clark not only needed to collect plant and animal specimens and get to know American Indian nations, they also had to map the newest addition to the United States: the Louisiana Territory.  As our summer expedition is working its way through Montana, we’ll do a little mapping of our own.

Reading

Choose one or more of the following reading activities.

  • Take a look at a few of the Lewis & Clark expedition maps.
  • Read some of the Montana journal entries together. The text may be a challenge with misspellings and archaic vocabulary, but it’s also a good opportunity to discuss how languages change or evolve over time.
  • Read to or with your child about the expedition’s portage experience at Montana’s Great Falls.

Expedition Exploration & Writing

  • Learn a few map skills. Choose a worksheet or activity from our Lewis & Clark Pinterest board.
  • Design a map of your own. It might be your favorite hiking route, your neighborhood, or an area river.

Once you’ve completed the activities write about maps and map making in your Lewis & Clark journal.

I’m giving my son bonus points if he can give me approximate coordinates for stops along the Lewis and Clark route. P would like to do both activities this week. We’ll see if we can fit in both in one week. The week is already half over. Do you think we can do it?

See you on the trail!
