Summer Slide is not happening here.
No way, no how. P is super proud of all the hard work he’s done and everything he’s accomplished in school this year, especially in reading. I’m super proud of him, too (and myself, frankly, for not losing it and strangling him during the tough times…remember the homework I had to iron?) I cannot allow him to lose the ground we fought so hard to win!
The trick will be to get him working on something educational that’s so fun he doesn’t notice it’s educational. Hmm… he and my dad share a love of all things Lewis and Clark. I think I’m on to something here…
“The Great Lewis & Clark Summer Expedition” for kids!
What do I hope to achieve with the Lewis & Clark Summer Expedition? I want to get my son outdoors, learn a little history, do some reading and writing, learn about map making and just plain keep that brain working.
How will it work?
- The expedition begins June 16th.
- We’ll “travel” across 10 states (the Lewis & Clark expedition route), one state each week.
- Each week/state brings new reading, activities and journal entries.
- P will follow his progress on the map with “stamps” to paste onto the map as he completes activities.

Want to join our expedition?
- Get started by helping your kids make journals, like the one we made in the photo above, for the expedition. They’ll need their journals and maps to track their progress across the country. They’ll also need them to complete activities. We used this idea from Honey Bear Lane’s website for inspiration. Check out our Lewis & Clark Summer Summer Expedition Pinterest Board for more ideas.
- Print the map. We’re going to crumple it up, soak it in tea and dry it out to make it look weathered and worn.
- Then try out this Go West Across America with Lewis & Clark game on the National Geographic website to get familiar with Lewis & Clark.
See you on the trail!
What a great educational program for the kids. I forwarded the link on to my daughter for my grandsons. They really like the creative interaction of Webrangers and have done all that’s on the site. Now they have another program to look forward too, thanks to you.
Thank you! And thanks for mentioning Web Rangers. I forgot all about it and I bet P would really like it!
You are amazing. I wish I had been that clever and ambitious. Oh yes, and hold down a full time job.
Thanks for the compliment, Jeanne, but I wouldn’t do it if it wasn’t fun!
It’s our first summer when I’ve had to think about filling our days with activities, since Kahlilah’s school in Amsterdam was full year. Great idea. I’m feeling inspired to come up with something appropriate fora 5 year old.
If it helps, I think most of the Lewis & Clark activities we’re planning will work well for 5-year-olds 🙂
This is such a neat idea. I’m following along. I can’t wait to see more!
Thank you. I’m glad to hear you’re be coming a long 🙂
Thanks so much for sharing on Bloggers Brags Pinterest Party!!
Thank YOU! I’ll definitely do it again!
