You may have noticed that I haven’t been writing much this summer. We’ve been super busy moving. After nearly eight years living among great neighbors we moved to a new neighborhood. While we planned, packed and cleaned we tried to think of a meaningful way to say goodbye and to let them know how much they mean to us.
You know what we learned? It’s darn hard to think of a good, personal way to say goodbye to phenomenal neighbors. Gift cards? Too impersonal. Gardening supplies? What if they already had them? Then I realized we all had gardening in common. P and I decided to make personalized garden stones.
We bought garden stone kits (on sale, of course) at Michael’s and then personalized them. We picked out a special something to place in the center of each garden stone, added chalkboard garden stakes to personalize them and bought extra ‘gems’ to make them extra special.
My son enjoyed mixing the cement and plopping gems into the wet cement. I enjoyed picking sayings out to put on the garden stakes and choosing the focal points. I’m not sure how the neighbors liked them; we left them in front of their doors, early in the morning, right before we left for the last time. I hope they love them as much as we loved being their neighbors and I hope they think of us when they see our garden stones in their gardens.
How thoughtful! What a great idea.
