On Facebook, my son’s first day of school look like this.
The reality was:
- “It’s time to get up, Buddy….P? Are you up? It’s the first day of school…get up!”
- “Eat, P!!”
- “Are you dressed yet? P?!”
- “It’s time to pack your lunch…P? Did you hear me?! It’s time to pack your lunch!”
- “I HATE school.”
- “Have you eaten breakfast and/or put on your clothes and/or packed your lunch yet??”
- “We can’t be late for the first day of school!”
- “If you don’t finish packing your lunch, all you’re going to have to eat at school is what you’ve packed so far.” *
- “You have to EAT YOUR BREAKFAST!“
- “BRUSH YOUR TEETH!!!”
- Make sure you brush the front teeth really well; it’s picture day today.”
- “You can’t wear those shoes. They’re still wet.”
- “You can’t wear all blue today, it’s picture day. Tomorrow you can wear whatever you want.”
- “Mom, we don’t have time for pictures. We’re going to be late.”
- “We always have time for pictures.”
- Oh my GAAAWWD, Mom! What is that smell? It smells like something died in the car!”
- “I’m going to take more pictures when we get to school so no complaining, okay?”
All said while I ran around the house throwing things in this bag, other things in that bag and cursing picture day on the first day of school.
*An icepack and a snack-bag of grapes.
I was so happy that my pokey little puppy was up before she needed to be, otherwise our morning would have gone about the same as yours. In fact, EVERYONE was up before they needed to be, but that meant a lot of down time where the kids kept asking, “Is it time to go yet?”
You might want to consider having P pack his lunch the night before so it is one less thing to worry about in the morning. I started doing that last year and it really helped cut down on the morning chaos.
I can relax a little when I remind myself P always has an adjustment period the first week of school. Packing lunch the night before is a great idea, it just seems like we can barely cram in homework, supper, shower, teeth brushing and setting out the next day’s clothing after work and before bedtime.
Ah, the good old days. ๐
You made the first day drama sound so fun and I’m sure it went well. So glad you had a chance to get in the first day photo. What a handsome little scholar.
We have to make it fun!
