In my family, instead of fighting winter, we try to embrace it. We get out there and make the most of the season. This year, all winter long I’ll share ideas for short winter field trips to make the snow and cold a little more fun. My hope is we’ll convert a few of you as you read about our winter outings.
Sand, Sun and…Snow?
Of course, you’ll have to wear more than a swimsuit, but a winter coat, boots, hat and mittens should do just fine (and there’s lower risk of sunburn).
Things you do at the beach in the summer that you can also do in the winter
- Bird-watch (bring your binocs)
- Build (snow) castles
- Collect rocks
- Throw rocks
- Collect (and throw) sticks
- Take a stroll along the shoreline
- Watch people boating (we actually saw a guy in a kayak during this outing)
- Look for animal tracks
- Watch people fishing
- Be safe around water! Notice we are only ever on the edge of the ice. We don’t take chances with ice.
Watching ice fishing is super interesting. Have you ever just watched ice-fishing activity? Augers, sleds, snowmobiles, ATVs, so many cool things to check out.
Things you can do at the beach in winter than you can’t do in summer
- Make snowballs
- Throw snowballs
- Walk on ice
- Crunch the ice
- Throw ice
- Sliiiiiide on the ice
- Look for ice formations
