Saturday, after listening to P watch episode after episode of Lab Rats, I told P to turn off the TV and find something creative to do. He wandered around aimlessly, running his hand along the tops of the sofas, gazing out the windows, walking to his room and back (TV Deprivation Syndrome). And then, “Can we go to Seroogy’s to get candy Legos? We can build with those. That’s doing something creative!”
Gol darn-it. I couldn’t argue with that (candy) logic. I hadn’t heard of candy Legos before and I hadn’t been in that store in years. It was probably time to go back and I could pick up a cashew turtle or two for myself. Time for a field trip!
Growing up in Green Bay, many of us found Seroogy’s chocolate butter fudge Easter eggs in our Easter baskets. A lot of us did our fundraising for band, scouts or camp by selling Seroogy’s meltaway chocolate bars. And who could forget their trademark green uniforms?
The irresistible smell of both coffee and chocolate greeted us as we walked through the sliding doors.
“I smell chocolate…no, coffee!” my son declared and headed straight for the first candy display. It must have been a little like walking into Willy Wonka’s Chocolate Factory for him. I walked a little slower enjoying the smell and taking in the candy and gifts surrounding us. We walked around the store, stopping to look at and comment on every single kind of candy.
“Ooh! This would be perfect for Grandma. I’ll have to remember this.” ” Look at these! These are perfect for C.” “They have Little Golden Books!”
Making Candy Educational
We walked through the whole store before picking up the package of candy bloks or candy Legos, as my son calls them. Our prize in hand, I told him he could pick out a pound of taffy.
Here’s where the education came in.
- Because there wasn’t a scale near the candy, he had to make estimates as he loaded his bag. He used the 8 oz container making estimates based on how heavy the candy Legos felt. He’d hold his taffy bag in one hand and the candy Legos in the other, weighing them. Then he’d add a few more pieces of taffy. Twice he walked up to the counter and asked the staff to weigh it. He carefully chose more and more flavors, until he finally had a pound of taffy.
- On the way out to the car we both made an estimate of how many pieces (52) were in the bag and he counted them all the way home.
- We talked about product placement, the “why” behind samples, pricing, and evaluating whether or not something’s worth the price of the item.
A Few More Reasons to Love Seroogys
Host gifts for out of state/country visits
Also a great place to take visiting friends and family. Gazing Drooling into the glass chocolate cases, we overheard tourists loading up on Seroogy’s chocolate. “All we do when we come to Wisconsin is eat.” You betcha.
Chocolate gifts for any occasion
A chocolate high heel shoe, adorable gift bags of assorted chocolates and yes, even a chocolate soldier are obvious choices, but Seroogy’s also offers a selection of sugar-free candy and chocolates, old fashioned candy (like we use to buy a Gigot’s Pharmacy back in the day), chocolate dipped potato chips and well, the list goes on and on.
Packers chocolate and gifts galore
A picture is worth a thousand words. Seroogy’s offers a lot of Packer-themed candy and an entire section of Packer gifts.
Unique cards
Seroogy’s card selection iss definitely better than your average Walgreens. We had a great time reading through them.
Super customer service
The best kind; they make eye contact, smile and are available and friendly when you need them.
Free samples
Who could say no to free samples of chocolate? We sampled chocolates, coffee, more chocolate, Jelly Belly jelly beans, and good old fashioned butter mints. It’s no wonder P asked, “Can we go to Seroogy’s every weekend?”
What did we end up building with the Lego candy blocks?
It is EAA AirVenture week after all 🙂
Just throwing this out there…I’m available anytime for THIS type of field trip! (we could even make it educational by hitting up Beerntsen’s and Seroogy’s and comparing like items!)
And Kaap’s. Don’t forget Kaap’s! And we should probably bring the kids to make it look good, right?
All I can say is wow! I didn’t know Seroogys has candy legos too. We made many trips to that wonderful store and always go there when in town. Their freshly ground coffee and chocolate treats takes away any resolve I might have to resist the temptation.
