I confess. I have a long-standing and completely irrational fear of geese. I thought I had it under control. I thought I hid it well. I did not. Sadly I passed it on to my son.
Today we *enjoyed* a walk on the sanctuary’s bridge through the lagoon. As we walked timidly, and at times with false bravado, we came up with a list of ways to survive the geese at the Bay Beach Wildlife Sanctuary.
1. Hide the bag of corn in your pocket
Pro tip: Wear camo for next level protection.
2. Bluff- Act like you’re not afraid
Cool as a cucumber…on the outside
3. Hide in the aviary
4. Know when to retreat
Act like you forgot something in the car and get out of there!
5. Avoid nesting geese and/or their young
6. Distract them with strategic throwing- toss away from your body
7. Get to higher ground
8. Feel the fear and do it anyway
We understand the complicated feelings you might have while visiting the Wildlife Sanctuary: wanting to feed the geese (who can resist buying those brown bags of corn?) but simultaneously knowing those geese can smell your fear, sense a weak link, and are posed to attack. Hopefully, our seven steps approach to hanging with geese helps you get through your next visit to the lagoon. Stay strong.
