3 Reasons Father’s Day Gifts Kill Me

Father's Day

Not all dads…

  1. enjoy mowing the lawn or using power tools. Isn’t it kind of like giving mom a washing machine or kitchen appliances for Mother’s Day?
  2. wear freaking neckties. In fact, I’d bet more dads do not wear neckties than do.
  3. enjoy grilling so much that they want a grill-related gift every year for the rest of their lives. Seriously.

And don’t even get me started on golf…

Come on, marketing departments! Get creative! Isn’t that what you get paid to do? And families, you get creative, too! You don’t have to buy that prefab crap. Find something unique about your fathers and recognize it in your own way.

Break out of the stereotypes!

My husband has a popsicle addiction so when I discovered this awesome DIY popsicle card for dads on Sassy Dealz, Papercrafts & Deals, I knew it was perfect. We’re going to give him an insane number of boxes of popsicles with our homemade card. It’ll definitely be a hit.

My dad? Well, he’s a lot harder. Neither one of my parents likes to receive things. They’ve “accumulated enough junk over the past 60 years”. This year I’ll buy my dad something he enjoys eating, cashews, deliver them in an interesting mug and we’ll spend the afternoon with him. Still a thing, but a small (funny) thing wrapped up in quality time spent together.

Fathers Day Card

I did find that there are more options this year on the internet thanks to creative bloggers, like these printable Father’s Day cards from Written Reality, and any of the many “All About Dad” interviews like these on Pinterest. I was also please to see more variety in the card aisle this year. Not so many golf and BBQ cards and more inside jokes and “you were there for me” cards. At least it’s a step in the right direction.

    • The stereotypes are just as bad for Mother’s Day, too. It’d be great if we could just focus on love and appreciation instead!

    • I know some men do. My brother and Grandpa are both guys that love(d) tools and would appreciate a tool-related gift. It just seems silly that there aren’t more options for Father’s Day gifts for those many dads that don’t care for tools, BBQs or neckties 🙂
