Six Halloween Books for a Six-Year-Old

I’m sure next year I’ll be writing about Goosebumps or Scooby Doo chapter books, but this year my son is still letting me read picture books to him before bed. He’s hand-picked these six titles as his favorite Halloween books this year. He’s kind of excited to be the “expert” making reading recommendations for his favorite holiday. Let us know what you think and tell us what your Halloween favorites are.

1. Abiyoyo a storysong by Pete Seeger

This retelling of a South African tale about a boy, his dad, and a giant isn’t just for Halloween. Paolo would listen to it three or more times a night if I’d do it.

2. T Rex Trick or Treats by Lois Grambling

T Rex can’t decide what to dress up as for trick or treating because nothing is scary enough.

3. Runaway Mummy by Michael Rex

A funny parody of the the classic children’s book The Runaway Bunny.

4. Where’s My Mummy? by Carolyn Crimi

A little mummy delays bedtime with one more game of Hide and seek with his Mummy. Paolo enjoys the rhymes, repetition, and of course, the creatures like Glop, Drac, and Bones.

5. I Dare You by Kathleen Keeler

Scary (tame) short stories to read in the dark with a flashlight.

6. Who Will Haunt My House on Halloween? by Jerry Pallotta

A little girl’s imagination carries her away as she waits to go trick or treating on Halloween. Though it’s a very tame book,  Paolo says he likes it because he, too, gets a little carried away while listening to the story, imagining the monsters, goblins and creatures.

  1. For my 3-1/2 year old, she loves Room on the Broom by Donaldson and Scheffler. Great rhyme, repetition and opportunity for fun sound effects.
