Kneecaps: A Wisconsin Tradition

kneecap Wisconsin dessert

I haven’t sunk my teeth into a good kneecap in years.

What? You’ve never eaten a kneecap? It’s a Wisconsin tradition you need to get in on.

A co-worker brought in a mountain of kneecaps today for her birthday treat. Best idea ever. She picked them up at the Willow Street Bakery for one last taste. The bakery, known for its delicious kneecaps, is closing its doors at the end of October.

If the only kneecap you’ve ever had are the two on your legs, get over there before they close! This is a food field trip I fully endorse.

  1. I’m 95…grew up in Manitowoc and still remember the knee caps we always had as dessert at our high school reunions, a short way out of town at a large, popular country restaurant. We called them by their German name and it has long vexed me that I cannot remember it.but In any language it means “YUM”.

    • Marge, were they called Knieküchle meaning Knee Patches?

Kubsch’s of Kellnersville, Muench’s of Alverno, & the Swan Club in DePere always served Knee Caps, possibly Freddy Brick did too when he had his restaurant. Willow Street definitely had the best. It was sad they closed. Late’s drive in use to serve them. I haven’t been home in a few years so no promises.

  2. They can still be found at Bakery on State in Manitowoc. They are the best I’ve ever had and coming from a Czech background with ancestors who settled in Kellnersville that says a lot. I’ve eaten more knee caps than I care to count. 😉

  3. Hartman’s Bakery in Manitowoc has amazing knee caps. They have been in business for many, many years. The owners are wonderful people.

  4. I grew up in Manitowoc and remember eating them at Hessel’s restaurant n Francis Creek. After a full family-style meal, I always managed to find room for a kneecap.
