The Lazy Mom’s Elf on the Shelf

Elf on the Shelf 01
Poor Elf-vis unwillingly got a jump-start on the game of hide and seek with the other stuffed animals jammed between the bed and the wall.

Hide and Seek with Elf on the Shelf

For some of us it’s almost Elf on the Shelf time again. My son knows now that I’m the mastermind behind the elf, but he loves the tradition so much he wants me to continue it this year, too. We never did Elf on the Shelf the way it was intended. Elf-vis wasn’t here to keep an eye on P’s behavior; he was here to help him spread the Christmas spirit.

After a couple of good years of staging Elf-vis for 25 days in December, I’m just not up for it. This year I’m taking the lazy and realistic route. I warned P the elf will be coming back, but he’ll be playing an epic game of Elf Hide & Seek instead of getting up to mischief and leaving special missions.

How do you play an epic game of Elf Hide and Seek? No letters. No elaborate scene setups. No planning. No instructions. Just 25 days of grabbing the elf on your way through the house and jamming him in a bookshelf or between the couch cushions. Careful. You’ll be tempted to get creative. Resist the urge and aim low. Not every day needs to be unicorns and rainbows.

I do need to confess. If I had more time and energy I would totally do something more elaborate. If that’s you, check out these ideas,  too.

  1. At the store Saturday, I saw Hide-and-Hug Olaf. Same concept as Elf on the Shelf. Thus proving Disney’s marketers can link Frozen to ANYTHING.
